Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince

Postby pesetas » Tue Jul 21, 2009 11:43 am

My daughters and I haven't missed a Harry Potter movie in the threatre, it's a tradition of ours. Having said that, we've now lost 3 hours of our lives that we aren't getting back (not to mention $50 in tickets and snacks). This movie was boring to me and boring to my teenaged daughters. I initially thought perhaps we'd outgrown it but now I don't think that's the case. The characters are still cool to me and so is the storyline. Just something about this one we couldn't exactly nail down why it's bad. It is very far off from the book for sure. Also introducing the usage of alcohol and other "potions" by the young characters was disturbing to me. Seeing little Hermoine drunk was just in bad taste...

Save your money and get the dvd when it hits the $5 bin at wallymart...

Hmm I agree and disagree in some aspects. True that there was something missing in this movie for sure. I kinda thought it was missing that 'atmosphere' that all the other movies (except for the third, hated that one with such a fiery passion) had. I did however enjoy the creepy aspect as this was one of the first times the movie had portrayed the dark aspects of the book. I thought the Katie scene was exceptional and it sent chills down my spine.

Honestly, I have issues with the acting. I thought it was mediocre at best and it took away from the story. Especially when Harry cries, both me and my sister bursted out laughing.

I think the only reason this movie is doing so well is because it is "Harry Potter". Since it's a beloved book, the movies do well because it's a chance to see our favorite characters in live action. Eye candy. That's all it really is, and that severely bothers me because the movies need their own story to make sense of things. All the movies feel incomplete to me and always lack important information and story. Since I want to get into film, I always see these kinds of movies as just trash and actually expect to see just that. So I was pretty much prepared not to be blown away.

In the end though, I feel neutral towards the movie because of all that. To me it's just another franchise sell out, like all the other movies. Some cool aspects, humorous banter and dark undertones in places, but still incomplete.

Well that's a bummer. Thanks for the review. I think I am still going to be sure to go see it - kinda like Pes, it's a tradition. I'll keep this in mind and won't expect much, and I'll post my review after. Hopefully it's better knowing this in advance.

Ugh, I could rail on Harry Potter and the half-backed, pseudo-Neitzchiean certain-people-are-special ideology it broadcasts, with its overt protectionism, backwards looking Victorian value set, but instead I'll rant about one thing: My bacon sandwich.

Whilst recording the very first HP movie they were at my college. I used to eat in the hall where they filmed the huge dining hall from the movie in. And the damned film crews were everywhere, getting in our way and generally being more annoying than even the most obnoxious tourist (at least when tourists take photos, they don't re-do them 34 times with different lighting or because somewhere within a 400 mile radius a squirrel sneezed). And they had food trucks from which they fed the cast and crew. But when I walked up, to this blight on our 500 year old architecture and asked for a mere bacon sandwich I was refused. They took our heritage, our time, took up all the space in coffee shops, interrupted our rowing and infringed upon our very university experience, but wouldn't give so much as a bacon sandwich in return. So screw them all!

Strong's just mad because someone wrote his life story, then someone else decided to make a movie out of it, and both changed his name so they wouldn't have to pay him for it.
